By State law, it is illegal to throw away any yard waste with your household garbage. This includes grass, weeds, leaves, garden waste, sod strips and pruning. Here are some options for proper yard waste disposal.
Curbside Yard Waste Collection
Curbside yard waste collection is available seasonally for those who choose to subscribe. A seasonal fee of $87, which is PREPAID directly to DSI, includes a yard waste cart and up to 10 compostable bags collected weekly. The 2016 season starts April 18 and goes through the week of November 14, weather permitting. An additional yard waste cart is available for $16/season. Call DSI/LSI to subscribe at 952-469-2239.
Bag it...Tag it!
For residents who choose not to subscribe to the seasonal yard waste program, an incidental service is available, which allows you to purchase tags for $3.00 each (one tag per bag or bundle of branches). Call DSI/LSI ahead to schedule collection on your regular route day. Tags are available at City Hall.

Compost at Home
Backyard composting is easy. Composting turns organic wastes - grasses, leaves, garden debris, and kitchen scraps - into a nutrient rich mixture that you can add to your soil in your yard and garden. Compost bins are sold at The Recycling Zone. Visit www.dakotacounty.us for information on bins. Compost bins can also be purchased at select garden and hardware stores, or you can make your own. Visit www.reduce.org to find out how.
Remember to keep leaves, seeds, and grass clippings out of streets and gutters and keep pet waste out of wetland buffers and ponds. Rain washes them into stormwater ponds where they encourage algae growth.
