Arbor Day Tree Planting 2017The city of Farmington is encouraging residents to get involved in two upcoming events in honor of it being named a 2018 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

“This is the 28th year that the city of Farmington has been named a Tree City USA,” said Katy Gehler, Public Works Director. “Thank you to the residents and schools for volunteering at events like the Arbor Day tree planting and the Earth and Arbor Day celebrations. Your long-term commitment to sustain the urban forest does not go unnoticed.”

Celebrate Arbor Day and Farmington’s Tree City USA status by volunteering at the Arbor Day tree planting Friday, April 27 from 10-10:30 a.m. North Trail Elementary School will be helping with the planting that will take place at Dakota County Estates Park. Each year the city of Farmington plants trees in its parks to celebrate Arbor Day in Minnesota. Everyone is invited to help out with the planting! 

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. 

Farmington achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: 
A tree board of department
A tree-care ordinances
An annual community forest budget of at least $2 per capita
An Arbor Day observance and proclamation
“Everyone benefits when elected officials, volunteers and committed citizens in communities like Farmington make smart investments in urban forests,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Trees bring shade to our homes and beauty to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benefits.”
